(CNN) -- Portugal football legend Eusebio, who was top scorer at the 1966 World Cup, died at the age of 71, his former club Benfica said Sunday.
He died from a heart attack, the Lisbon side said on its website.
The striker, affectionately known as the "Black Panther," was idolized throughout the Portuguese-speaking world and considered one of the sport's greatest players.
"Always eternal #Eusebio, rest in peace," Real Madrid forward and current Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo tweeted alongside a picture of both men together.
Portugal's former world player of the year, Luis Figo, tweeted that Eusebio was the "king" while Brazil's Pele, considered by many to be the best footballer of all time, tweeted that Eusebio was like a "brother" to him.
"May God receive him with open arms," said Pele.
Eusebio, whose full name was Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, played for three North American Soccer League teams in the twilight of his career but is best known for his exploits in 15 years at Benfica.
Born in 1942 in Mozambique, which was then a Portuguese territory, he scored 41 goals in 64 appearances for his adopted country.
Eusebio was European Footballer of the Year in 1965 but won global acclaim a year later at the World Cup in England, where his nine goals helped Portugal reach the semifinals.
World Cup scorer
He scored two goals as Portugal eliminated defending champions Brazil in the group stage, then netted four times in an incredible quarterfinal comeback against North Korea as his side rallied from 3-0 down to win 5-3 in one of the tournament's most famous matches.
Eusebio scored again in the semifinals against England, but the hosts won 2-1 before beating Germany in the final.
"His talent brought joy for entire generations, even those who didn't live through the most glorious moments of his career," Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva told Portuguese television.
World football body FIFA said Eusebio was considered "one of the best footballers of all time and best ever from Portugal."
"Football has lost a legend," FIFA president Sepp Blatter tweeted as the tributes continued. "But Eusebio's place among the greats will never be taken away."
Added UEFA president Michel Platini: "On the field, Eusebio was a true legend, both in the colors of Portugal and Benfica," he told UEFA's website.
"But also off it, he was a true ambassador for Portuguese football on the international stage. He was more than a footballer. A good and charming man, Eusebio will be sadly missed."
During his career with Benfica, the Lisbon side won the European Cup in 1962. He scored 733 times in 745 professional matches, according to FIFA.
He won 10 league titles and five Portuguese cups with the Eagles and was Portugal's top league scorer between 1964 and 1973.
"We're saddened to hear Benfica legend Eusebio has passed away," tweeted Manchester United. "He was a fantastic player and a friend of the club."

Eusebio through the years
Recap
One of the world's all-time football greats, the Portugal and Benfica forward Eusebio, has died at the age of 71, his former club confirmed.
Nicknamed the Black Panther, Eusebio was regarded as one of the best players ever and helped Portugal to third place at the 1966 World Cup, finishing as top scorer in that tournament with nine goals.
The Mozambique-born striker made his name at club level with Benfica, winning 11 league titles and one European Cup during a 15-year spell there. He also won two Golden Boot awards as Europe's leading goalscorer.
He notched 41 goals in 64 appearances for Portugal.
Jose Mourinho had a bit more to say about Eusebio ahead of their FA Cup tie against Derby which is taking place just now.
He said he was more than a footballer in Portugal and his feats will never be forgotten.
"He's unique in our country," he told BT Sport.
"He's one of the greatest in the history of football, but for our country he's much more than that.
"Irreplaceable - his place in the history of Portuguese football, but more than that in the history of our country.
"He's a man that doesn't belong to Benfica, doesn't belong to a club, he belongs to a country and I prefer to say that people like him are immortal, because their history and their legacy remains forever.
"So of course I'm very sad, especially my assistant Silvino [Louro] because Eusebio was his coach for a long time, but I'm not so sad because I really feel that he's immortal for our country."

Chairman of the PFA Gordon Taylor has described Eusebio as "a football icon and one of the game's greatest players".
He said: "It was a privilege to see him play, to play against him and to know him as a friend."
"Eusebio was a PFA Hall of Fame merit award winner and Guest of Honour who received countless standing ovations when he attended our awards with the Manchester United 1968 European Cup winning team."

Eusebio shakes Gordon Banks' hand in 1973.
'Crowned European Footballer of the Year in 1965, Eusebio was Golden Boot winner at the World Cup 12 months later, scoring nine times in just six games, including four in an incredible quarter-final win over North Korea at Goodison Park, when Portugal came back from three goals down, an individual haul exceeded only once in the competition's entire history.
English audiences were captivated by him. In addition to landing the BBC's Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award in 1966, he also had a waxwork created by Madame Tussauds in London.
So popular had Eusebio become that Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar passed a decree that prevented the player leaving the country to take up a lucrative offer from Inter Milan.
"I explained to (Salazar) that I had the chance to earn a lot of money but he said, 'No, you're part of the patrimony of Portugal - you can't leave'," Eusebio recounted in an interview with Four Four Two magazine in 2008.
"Looking back on my career I can't say I am sad about it."
Eusebio retains a special place in the affections of English football, although it is in Portugal where his loss will be most keenly felt.
"Always eternal Eusebio, rest in peace," said Ronaldo on Twitter.
Eusebio spent his latter years travelling the world with the Portuguese national side as a paid "soccer ambassador."
He is survived by his wife, Flora, two daughters and several grandchildren.'
'Yet those two days - beaten and broken - do scant justice to one of the greatest players of all time, voted 10th in the list of 20th century stars by the influential World Soccer magazine.
Born in Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony, to a very poor family, Eusebio's football skills allowed him to move to Lisbon in his late teens.
After scoring a hat-trick on his debut for Benfica in a friendly in 1961, Eusebio quickly established himself with the Eagles, going on to find the net on a record 317 goals in 301 Portuguese league appearances. His tally of 41 goals in 64 caps for his country compares favourably with Ronaldo's 47 in 109 appearances.
Although he played for eight clubs in total, all his significant achievements came during a 15-year stint with Benfica, winning 11 Portuguese titles, five domestic cups and the league's top scorer on seven occasions.
He also won the European Cup once - scoring twice in the 5-3 win over Real Madrid in 1962 - and featured in another three finals.
Nicknamed the Black Panther, Eusebio was noted for the power of his shot, but also his speed and athleticism. As Stepney could testify, in addition he was a fine sportsman.'
Here's a profile of Eusebio sent through from the Press Association that's well worth a proper read:
'Until Cristiano Ronaldo came along, no Portuguese footballer had a bigger impact on the English game than Eusebio.
Had fortune smiled rather more favourably on one of the finest strikers of all time, Portugal may have been the country that now looks back on those grainy images of 1966 as their greatest day. England may have had to wait another nine years to crown their first European Cup winners.
'Instead, in this country, Eusebio will chiefly be remembered for two things - being the star of the team England defeated at Wembley to reach the World Cup final, and two years later, a remarkable act of sportsmanship.
'When Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney kept out a Eusebio shot in the 1968 European Cup final en route to Matt Busby's men beating Benfica, the striker's reaction was to applaud the United man's efforts.
Some more tributes coming in on Twitter from the big names of football around the world.
Ruud Gullit, Franz Beckenbauer and Peter Schmeichel among the latest.
Born Eusebio da Silva Ferreira in the Mozambique capital Maputo on Jan. 25, 1942, he rose to international prominence at the 1966 World Cup in England and went on to cement his reputation over the following decade, winning many admirers with his speed, technique, athleticism and a ferocious right-foot shot.
Eusebio began playing football barefoot as a child on Mozambique's dust track pitches before jumping into the spotlight at Benfica.
He helped the club reach four European Cup finals, the last in 1968 when they lost to Manchester United in extra-time at Wembley. Benfica won the trophy in 1961 and 1962.

"At the moment though this isn't the most important thing, what's most important is to remember the man who was, and always will be, in the place of the immortals of this country and was clearly of emblematic importance for Portuguese in the 20th century, above all during the 1960s when Portugal lived under a dictatorship."
