The General Medical Council is investigating eight medical staff over the death of Mrs De Jesus in 2011

A pregnant woman with appendicitis died after two unsupervised trainee surgeons removed one of her ovaries by mistake.

Maria De Jesus, 32, died on the operating table after doctors finally removed her appendix 19 days later.

She was discharged eight days after the bungled operation but readmitted herself nearly a week later with stomach pains.

The mother-of-three miscarried two days later – and medics finally saw a report confirming the trainees’ mistake that had lain unread for nine days.

An inquest heard that 100ml of septic fluid was drained from her abdomen the following day but her condition failed to improve and she died in theatre.

Husband Adelino De Jesus, 53, said there had been a litany of errors.

He said: “My wife’s death could have been prevented, I am sure of it. By the time they realised how serious the situation was, and they promised us all the best consultants, it was too late.”

Recording a narrative verdict at Walthamstow, North East London, coroner Chinyere Inyama said a lost window of opportunity could have saved Mrs De Jesus.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals Trust has admitted liability for her death at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex, and has apologised to her family.

The General Medical Council is investigating eight medical staff including consultant Dr Babatunde Coker over the death of Mrs De Jesus, from Dagenham, Essex, in November 2011.
