Toddler Lia Green's father 'delivered fatal blow'

Lia GreenLia Green had extensive bruising when she died
A three-year-old girl died after her father inflicted massive internal injuries "normally seen in car crash victims", a court heard.
Lia Green, from Preston, was covered in bruises when her lifeless body was taken to hospital on 30 August, Preston Crown Court was told.
Her father Richard Green, 23, denies murdering her and allowing or causing her death.
Her mother Natalie Critchley, 22, also denies allowing or causing her death.
The court heard emergency services were called to Lia's home on Norris Street after her parents said she was suffering from sickness and diarrhoea and was weak and falling asleep.
She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Royal Preston Hospital.
'Severed bowel'
Peter Wright, prosecuting, told the jury: "The cause of her death was not some freak injury or terrible accident but blunt force trauma to her abdomen that had been delivered with such force that it had caused massive and ultimately fatal internal injuries.
"Part of her bowel had been completely severed by the force of the blow."
The jury was shown images of Lia which showed extensive bruises to her head, neck, chest, abdomen, limbs, buttocks and back.
Many of the bruises were less than 48 hours old, but some were older and evidence of repeated physical abuse, Mr Wright told the jury.
The prosecutor said: "This was physical abuse from which she ought to have been protected by her parents, rather than exposed."
He added the abuse "eventually" led to her death, at the hands of Mr Green.
The day after Lia's death Mr Green was arrested. He told officers his daughter had fallen while on swings at a playground.
'Simmering resentment'
The court heard police had alerted social services who visited the family after Mr Green was caught smoking cannabis with children present.
A social worker reported that while conditions were "less than perfect" there were no other concerns about the child apart from his cannabis use.
The court heard Ms Critchley, a nursery assistant, had been having an affair and unemployed Mr Green harboured a "building and simmering resentment" towards his partner.
Leading up to the death of Lia there was considerable friction between the parents, Mr Wright told the court.
The jury heard Mr Green, who was looking after Lia, visited the nursery where Ms Critchley worked the day before the child's death.
A member of staff described him as "mad and swearing" as he told Ms Critchley to come home because Lia was unwell.
The court heard computer records showed searches made that evening on the NHS Direct website for "a three-year-old hurting head and being sick", and a telephone call to a local surgery that was closed.
At 08:11 BST on the 30 August a 999 called was made, the court heard.
Both the call handler and paramedics who arrived had "misgivings" about the parents' account of their daughter's injuries.
The trial continues.

136. Ding, Dong, a Morreu Bruxa .

It sucks.

Wikipedia:
"Lombardo’s signal was intercepted by British Intelligence. As a result Mrs Thatcher and her War Cabinet, meeting at Chequers the following day, agreed to a request from Admiral Sir Terence Lewin, the Chief of the Defence Staff, to alter the rules of engagement and allow an attack on the Belgrano outside the exclusion zone.[10]

Although the group was outside the British-declared Total Exclusion Zone of 370 km (200 nautical miles) radius from the islands, the British decided that it was a threat.

After consultation at Cabinet level, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher agreed that Commander Chris Wreford-Brown should attack the Belgrano.[11]

At 15:57 (Falkland Islands Time (FKT)[N 1]) on 2 May, Conqueror fired three 21 inch Mk 8 mod 4 torpedoes[12] (conventional, non-guided, torpedoes), each with an 805-pound (363 kg) Torpex warhead.

While the Conqueror was also equipped with the newer Mark 24 Tigerfish homing torpedo, there were doubts about its reliability.[13] Initial reports from Argentina claim that Conqueror fired two Tigerfish torpedoes on Belgrano.[14] Two of the three torpedoes hit the General Belgrano. According to the Argentine government, Belgrano's position was 55°24′S 61°32′WCoordinates55°24′S 61°32′W.[15]"

Ding Dong! chart play sparks fierce debate

Opinions are divided over whether a song at the centre of an anti-Margaret Thatcher campaign should be played on this week's Official Chart Show.
Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead could chart inside the top five on Sunday.
MP John Whittingdale said "it would be better" not to play it, while DJ Paul Gambaccini insisted: "It's not something to editorialise about."
A Radio 1 spokesman said a decision would be made "when the final chart positions were clear".
"This is an attempt to manipulate the charts by people trying to make a political point," Mr Whittingdale, who is chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, told the Daily Mail
"Most people find that offensive and deeply insensitive."
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, music critic Neil McCormick opined that "there is no reason for the BBC to risk upsetting many listeners just to satisfy a few troublemakers".
The paper also quoted former Conservative Party chairman Lord McAlpine, who said he was "absolutely astounded" the corporation was "even considering playing it".
Lady Thatcher's biographer Charles Moore: Thatcher is 'Dorothy' not 'wicked witch'
But Conservative MP Philip Davies said: 'It's a chart programme so if it's top of the charts they have to play it. It's not for the BBC to define on what basis something is in the charts."
'Programme of record'
A number of media experts have told the BBC the Wizard of Oz track should be played, particularly if it charts inside the Top 10.
They include Trevor Dann, the BBC's former head of music entertainment, who said he could not see "any reason" why it should not be played.
"The chart is almost like a news programme; it's a programme of record," he said.
"It's not for the BBC to judge if it's an appropriate record for people to buy and therefore for them to play."
His position was echoed by radio consultant John Myers, who felt it should be played provided there was no reference to the campaign surrounding it.
"If you set up a chart show to play the nation's most purchased or downloaded songs, that's what you have to play," said Mr Myers, a former chief executive of the Radio Academy.
"You don't have to say why people have bought it, but you do have to play it."

Banned by the BBC

Perhaps the highest profile track to be banned by the BBC in recent years was Frankie Goes to Hollywood's debut single Relax, following its release in 1984.
Then Radio 1 DJ Mike Read was playing the thumping dance anthem on his Radio 1 chart show and removed the needle from the record midway through the song when the sexual nature of the lyrics suddenly dawned on him.
Read branded the record "obscene", vowing never to play it again, with the rest of the BBC swiftly following his lead.
But the airplay ban only served to increase the notoriety and popularity of the record and it went on to occupy the number one spot for five weeks, without the BBC's help.
When Frankie Goes to Hollywood's follow-up single Two Tribes went to number one, Relax climbed back up the charts to number two.
Later that year the ban was finally lifted and Relax featured on the Christmas Top of the Pops and Radio 1's countdown of the year's best-selling records.
Journalist and DJ Paul Gambaccini has expressed a similar opinion, telling BBC WMthat the programme was "not a programme of choice".
"The Top 40 is the news of music," he went on. "It's not something to editorialise about - it's just fact. You can't change reality."
"I feel utterly sorry for all the chart shows," added Vivienne Pattison of Mediawatch UK, a group that campaigns for family values in the media.
"It's put them in a really invidious position.
"But chart shows exist to play the most bought or downloaded songs, and to change that is to interfere with a democratic process."
The track is also number one in the Capital Chart's Big Top 40. Earlier this week, its sponsor Vodafone said: "We simply sponsor the chart itself, we don't pass comment on the tracks it contains
Greg Dyke, a former director general of the BBC, said Lady Thatcher herself would have found the idea of not playing the track "ridiculous".
"If they don't play it they are making a political statement," he told Newsbeat's Chi Chi Izundu.
The original track was performed in the 1939 Judy Garland film by characters celebrating the demise of the much-hated Wicked Witch of the East.
Opponents of Margaret Thatcher have been buying copies of the song following the former Prime Minister's death on Monday at the age of 87.
According to the Official Charts Company, Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead is currently on course to claim the number three placing in Sunday's countdown.
In 1977 the BBC refused to play God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols when it charted during the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Thatcher 'death Tweet' policeman Jeremy Scott quits

A police officer who reportedly wrote on Twitter that he hoped Baroness Thatcher's death was "painful and degrading" has resigned.
Sgt Jeremy Scott of the Metropolitan Police is understood to have published a number of offensive messages since the former prime minister's death.
Sgt Scott is said to have claimed her death was "87 years too late" and added that the world was a "better place".
The Met described the comments as "completely unacceptable".

After the tweets were widely reported Sgt Scott took the matter to the Directorate of Professional Standards.
He then submitted his resignation before a police suspension over the incident came into force. It was accepted with immediate effect.
Sgt Scott had reportedly described news of the death as "marvellous stuff" and expressed a wish that the current prime minister, chancellor and home secretary were next.
Commander Allan Gibson said: "This officer's behaviour was completely unacceptable and it is right that he has resigned."
On Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron branded some reaction to the death of Lady Thatcher as "pretty distasteful".
He went on: "I think the overwhelming sense across the country - and you can see it yesterday in the House of Commons - is that we are mourning the loss of someone who gave a huge amount to this country, an extraordinary leader."
Baroness Thatcher's funeral is to be held in London on Wednesday.
